What changes the cost of a spring replacement

One spring or two. Most double garage doors hang on two torsion springs, and many singles on one. A single spring is from $195 + HST and a pair is from $325 + HST.

Door size and weight. A 16x7 insulated double door is heavier than an 8x7 single, so it needs thicker, longer springs. The starting prices above cover the common residential sizes. A very heavy or custom door is priced on site before we start.

Spring type. Torsion springs sit on the bar above the door. Older single doors sometimes use extension springs along the side tracks instead, from $175 + HST for a pair, safety cables included.

Cycle rating. Standard springs are the starting price. A high-cycle upgrade adds $50 to $120 + HST extra and roughly doubles spring life.

Worn parts found on the day. If the cables are frayed or the bearing plates are worn, we show you before we touch them. A pair of cables is from $165 + HST. Nothing is added unless you approve it.

Time of day. Calls between 8 pm to 7 am carry an after-hours fee of $75 + HST. Weekend surcharge: none.

One spring or both?

On a two-spring door, both springs went up the same day and have done the same number of cycles. When one snaps, the other is close behind. Replacing the pair costs less than two separate visits, and you are not stuck with a door that won't open again a few months later. We quote both options on the spot and you choose.

Standard or high-cycle springs

A standard spring is rated for about 10,000 cycles, one cycle being one open and one close. A family that uses the garage as its front door can run through that in six or seven years. A high-cycle spring, $50 to $120 + HST extra, is rated for roughly twice as many. If you plan to stay in the house, it is usually the better buy.

What the price includes

  • The spring or springs, sized to your door
  • Labour, with the door balanced and tested before we leave
  • A check of the cables, drums, bearing plates and rollers, with anything worn shown to you first
  • A spring warranty of 3 years and a labour warranty of 3 years

Why not replace it yourself?

A torsion spring holds enough tension to lift a door that can weigh more than two grown adults. Winding one without the right bars and training is how people get hurt, and online parts are often sized wrong for the door. For the price of a pair of springs, a trained tech does it in about an hour with the warranty in writing.

Spring replacement cost questions

How much does it cost to replace a garage door spring in Ontario?

With us in Ajax and Pickering, one torsion spring is from $195 + HST and a pair is from $325 + HST, parts and labour included. You approve the price before we start.

Is it cheaper to replace both springs at once?

Over the life of the door, yes. A pair costs less than two separate single-spring visits, and on a two-spring door the second spring usually goes soon after the first.

How long does a garage door spring last?

A standard spring is rated for about 10,000 open-and-close cycles. At four cycles a day that is roughly seven years. High-cycle springs last about twice as long.

How long does a spring replacement take?

One spring takes 45-60 min on site, and a pair takes 60-90 min. Most spring jobs are done on the first visit.

Is there a service call fee?

There is a $29 + HST diagnostic, waived when we do the repair. If you go ahead with the spring replacement, you don't pay it.

Does home insurance cover a broken garage door spring?

Usually not. A spring that snaps from age counts as wear and tear. Damage from a car or a storm is different, so ask your insurer, and we give you the price in writing for the claim.

Do you charge more for Pickering?

No. Pickering pays the same posted prices as Ajax. No travel fee anywhere in our service area.
